Hi, it’s me, your Reluctant Lesbian Fashion Blogger. I didn’t choose this life, it chose me.
I am going to preface all of this by saying I don’t consider myself a Fashion Girlie, not really. I’m really intimidated by bold print mixing. I can’t get into a “bloomer” (pantaloon?). I refuse to buy this moment’s trendy sneaker. I own nothing considered “designer.”
The majority of items hanging in my closet these days are vintage finds I’ve collected over the years. And in the last couple of years, with so much traveling and moving, I’ve scaled back my clothing shopping considerably, more so since trying out Nuuly.
This isn’t a Nuuly ad, but at this point, I should be sponsored. I sing the praises of Nuuly to anyone who will listen!
Experimenting with a clothing rental service has been a game changer. It’s allowed me to take a minimalist approach to my wardrobe, only keeping my favorite archival pieces and good basics on hand while having the option to try out more unique, on-trend things when and if I feel like it.
It’s great for special events, like when I need an evening gown but don’t want to drop $500 on something I’ll wear once.
Plus, as someone whose sizing fluctuates a lot, I like that I’m not constantly having to head to the tailor or invest in bigger or smaller sizes. I can just rent up or down a size as needed.
Dare I say it’s more sustainable?
That said, I’m sharing what I got from Nuuly this month, along with some ideas on how I’ll style each item. I’m including some links to the exact items featured as well as similar items you can shop.
Some of the links are affiliates, meaning I earn a small commission if you buy the items linked at no extra cost to you.
As of now, I have no plans to turn Sacred Obscene into a fashion blog. But I normally share these types of roundups on Instagram, which I no longer use, and my friends and followers there seemed to really like it. Look forward to it even! I thought I’d try it out here, so I can have a non-ephemeral place to document all of my favorite looks.
A bit about me if you’ve stumbled here by accident: I’d define my style as tomboy femme/lesbian soccer mom with no kids. I opt for comfortable, low-key, unfussy pieces, and most of my wardrobe is vintage.
In the summer, I prioritize cottons and linens, any natural, breathable materials to survive Louisiana summers.
When in doubt, I’m going to wear a thrashed t-shirt and a good pair of jeans with beat-to-shit Vans.
The Denim Mini Dress of My Dreams

This denim dress was a risk. The reviews were not great, but this is where understanding your body shape and which silhouettes work best pays off. I could just tell by the shape of this dress that it was going to do me a lot of favors. I opted for a medium and it fits like a glove. It’s giving ‘90s MILF in a way I’m always trying to channel.
Surfer Girl Drawstring Skirt

The minute I saw this skirt, I knew it would fit perfectly into my vision for Dive Bar Summer. It reminds me a lot of the kind of stuff I always sought out at Limited Too or Rave Girl as a kid (was that a local chain or did y’all have Rave Girl too?). It required a proper steaming (everything from Nuuly usually does), but it’s everything. I went with a size medium, and I find the skirt true to size. I went simple with the styling, but I also think any cool vintage tee or even a bikini top would play nicely here, too.

I’ve been wanting to try something from Damson Madder for a while. I’m a little iffy on a drop waist, but that’s the beauty of Nuuly — getting to try new styles without the commitment. I’m not in love with this dress on me, but it’s fun to play dress up! I got a “12” which translates to a US size 8, and it was fairly true to size. However, all the elastic makes this one pretty forgiving if you’re between sizes. I like that you can tie the ties a multitude of ways, but ultimately, I think it’s just a bit too long for my proportions.
The Summer Jean Shorts I’ve Now Rented Twice

I was introduced to this Pistola brand through Nuuly, and I’m really in love with the way they cut their denim. It just works on my body. I rented these same shorts earlier this year, but I got a size too big. I downsized this time and I’m quite happy with the look. These shorts are kind of A-line cut making them very roomy in the leg, which I find super comfy. I got a 29, but I’m probably between a 29 and 30. Fairly true to size! I styled it with this incredible jean jacket I just scored at an estate sale (I’ve linked to a similar one) but I love a denim on denim moment always.

Pistola doesn’t miss, I’m sorry it’s true! I actually own this same jean in black (size 31) that I purchased from a Nuuly rental! I sized down in this pair (got a 30) because I wanted a more fitted look, and I gotta admit I love them in this wash too! Tempted to buy, but I don’t want to commit to a pant in the dead of Louisiana summer. I paired this with a scarf I got a decade ago at Forever 21, but any cool scarf would be super cute here.
Going Out Top Gets A Summer Makeover

I’m renting this little blouse for the second time this year. I just noticed online it comes in tons more colors! This go around, I’m styling it over a bikini top with a handmade coral necklace I recently scored at an antique mall. I love the bikini peeking out here — forever trying to incorporate a little unfussy sex appeal when I can.
That’s all for now! Thanks for sticking around.
